Water Partnership: participation of Ukraine
On December, the 1—2nd, 2005 the meeting "Water partnership: Participation of Ukraine" was held in Kyiv. It was passed under patronage of the State Committee of Water Management of Ukraine and by participation of Global Water Partnership (GWP) representatives.
GWP is a network of the partner organizations, which actively are engaged in promotion and implementation of the integrated water resources management (IWRM) in the world. Today 47 countries are members of this network.
GWP is working on implementation of the international obligations adopted in Johannesburg and achievement of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) regarding development of the action plans of rational and integrated water management of the main rivers of the world. It helps the countries to accelerate process of development of water strategies and action plans of the important river basins.
The main principles of the GWP work: transparent and active information sharing, development of the partnership and stakeholders participation in the IWRM, the creation of the neutral platform for promotion of IWRM at the national level.
During the meeting the representatives of GWP (coordinators of the GWP net in Stockholm, The Chairmen of the Regional Council GWP, the representatives of GWP of Caucasus, Bulgaria, Lithuania) exchanged experience on the GWP work, explained the aim and tasks of the national water partnerships in the countries of Easter Europe. The Ukrainian participants presented the activities of different state institutions, scientific, industrial, private and public organizations. The representatives of NGO ("МАМА-86" and Ukrainian water net) took part in the meeting and presented their own experience in the solving of water problems in Ukraine. The representatives discussed the benefits and advantages for Ukraine and Regional and GWP of Ukraine joining to GWP as 47th member.
The results of these 2-day discussions were reflected in the resolution that was adopted by the participants of the meeting. The main positions of the resolution include: the confirmation by all the participants of the meeting readiness to work on entry of Ukraine to the membership of GWP, to begin the entrance of individual members to GWP, to create the initiative group to work for establishing the water partnership in Ukraine and to hold a meeting of the initiative group and a meeting of Ukrainian organizations interested in the solving of the water management problems in Ukraine.
The registration of independent Ukrainian organizations in GWP has been launched, that gives a possibility to register the country as a member of GWP has been launched.
