April 22, 2014, Feodosia, Crimea — In honor of Earth Day 2014, the city’s environmental NGO “MAMA-86-Feodosia” and the Crimean Republican Association “Ekologiya i Mir” held a special event at the Feodosia Secondary School № 13 aimed at highlighting solutions to problems concerning efficient land and energy use.

During the meeting, school principal Natalia Levina and teacher Olga Novosadova drew students’ attention to such important topics as new recycling technologies, the need for soil conservation and energy savings. Pupils of the 5th and 8th forms presented reports on these issues.

Earth Day was first held in the United States in 1970. Founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in, a year later the event was dubbed Earth Week and became a popular annual event. Since 1990, Earth Day has grown into a global tradition and currently involves hundreds of millions of participants from 181 countries. Each year a variety of functions such as conferences, exhibitions, clean-up actions and tree plantings are held worldwide to demonstrate support for environmental protection.
