In April 2012 MAMA-86 together with the European office of World Health Organization (WHO) carried out the 1st training on water safety plan (WSP) for professionals from 24 urban water utilities of Ukraine.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends a holistic approach incorporating comprehensive risk assessment and risk management “from source to tap” in ensuring safe water. This approach has been termed a Water Safety Plan (WSP).

The Protocol on Water and Health (Protocol) obliges countries to set targets, and monitor progress towards these targets. Water Safety Plans (WSPs) have been identified as an effective instrument for improving the drinking water quality by the Meeting of the Parties to the Protocol and valuable targets by the Protocol’ Task Force on Indicators and Reporting.

Before the WSP training in Kyiv the WHO Guidelines on Drinking water Quality, WSP manual  WSP Quality Assurance Tool and Road map to support country-level implementation on WSPs were translated into Russian especially by WHO and introduced firstly to the training participants.

Guidance materials on the development of a WSPs, and tools for the assessment of WSPs are freely available on the WHO website (Drinking Water) http://www.who.int/water_sanitation_health/dwq/en/.
