The initiative "the River Ribbon" began in May 2005 as a help to the Russian rivers. The idea of the river relay meant to organize public actions on the watersides of the rivers and lakes. In different regions it was passed from one hand to another by representatives of non-governmental organizations, local authorities, deputies, political parties, schools, Orthodox church, business organizations.

On the 20th of October 2005 in the hall of the Nizhegorod Kreml that was full of the "cleaners" of the Russian rivers, a transmission of the blue cloth "The River Ribbon" by the representatives of the NGO of the Dnister river basin took place.

On the blue cloth there is information about the held actions. Every region added to the cloth their own bit of cloth with the name of the river or lake, where the participants of the River net worked. As a result its length was 70 meters. Totally the length of cleaned watersides in Russia was more than 400 kilometers in more than 350 water basins. In the actions approximately 100 000 people and more than 200 organizations took part. Only in the Nizhegorod region from watersides of the rivers and lakes 100 tons of the garbage were collected and carried out. Now "The River Ribbon" moved to the watersides of the Dnister river and after that the relay will be passed to the district Washington to the Potomak river.
