Major Events and Achievements

March 2005 During the World Water Day 2005, which in this year according to the decision of the United Nations has began the UN International Decade for Action Water for Life 2005–2015 to promote worldwide access to safe drinking-water and sanitation. Mama-86 network has conducted a broad informational campaign at local and national levels.
3-5 March 2005 the delegation of five representatives of pilot eco-sanitation project participated in the two events on water and sanitation problems in the Netherlands: public debate in the Hague and working conference "Women for Water" in Soesterberg.
- November 2004 From 29 November till 3 December the Global WASH Forum "Water, Sanitation and Hygiene for all — Solutions and actions; local and national" had been hold in Dakar, Senegal. More than 400 official representatives were invited to take part in the Global Forum. There are four main topics in the Forum agenda: finance — mobilization of resources to achieve the MDGs on W&S; coalitions — development of the collaborative partnerships at the local level; local government — development of capacity and strength of local authorities and organizations to reach the MDGs on W&S; policy — what can governments do? The outcomes will be: Roadmap, framework for action; Cadre of supports for WASH at different levels; "expressions of interest" to collaborate at governmental level; experience exchange on how to accelerate action towards the MDGs; creation/development of WASH coalitions at country level; internal outcomes for WSSCC, especially strategy.

- October 2004 On October 12—17 four co-ordinators of MAMA-86 project and six water experts visited Munich іn the scope of the MATRA project "Cooperation for Rural Sustainable Development" (Munich, Bavaria).
On 12—13 October 2004 the regional consultations towards Global WASH Forum were held in Stara Zagora, Bulgaria. The regional group on Central and Eastern Europe and the Newly Independent States — group CEE &G12 was established at the Third Global Forum in Barbados, 1995. The representatives and national coordinators of Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC) from Bulgaria, Kyrgizstan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan took part in the consultations. The agenda of the regional consultation included the presentations of W&S problems and WASH activities, discussion of the experiences, perspectives and capacities of WASH campaign at region and country levels, the development of local and national WASH coalitions and the plans on region presentation at Dakar Forum and exhibition.
On October 26 MAMA-86 and Ukrainian Water Association organized the public hearing on the Draft of the State Program "Drinking water of Ukraine" (House of Scientists, Kyiv).
On October 30 the first eco-toilet as a result of the joint MAMA-86 and WECF MATRA project was festively inaugurated in Gozhuly school (Poltavska oblast).
- September 2004 — On September 22 in the framework of International Water Forum AQUA — Ukraine — 2004 MAMA-86 and Ukrainian Water Association organized the national multistakeholders seminar "Water, sanitation and Hygiene for all in Ukraine" funded by Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC) and MATRA Project (International Exhibition Center, Kyiv).
- June 2004 — Ten representatives of MAMA-86 participated in the Fourth Ministerial Conference on Children's Health & Environment, in the NGO Healthy Planet Forum, in the WECF network conference "Our Common Future", and in the Hungarian Women's Day on Chemicals and Health (Budapest, Hungary).
- March 2004 — Trainings of teachers and "Water School" for journalists that was dedicated to World Water Day took place in the Utility Company "Water and Informational Center" on March 19, 2004. World Water Day 2004 was commemorated under the theme "Water and Disaster". A leaflet "World Water Day 2004" was published under the cooperation of Central Administration on Education and Science of Kyiv City Administration, UC "Water and Informational Center", Kyiv Vodocanal and MAMA-86.
- February 2004 — Releasing of a Russian version of the Manual on Informational and Educational Work on Water Problems, composed on the basis of experience of the "Drinking Water in Ukraine" campaign, and Report on Implementation of Technical Solutions of Drinking Water Problems that was realized by MAMA-86 under the pilot projects program during 2001—2003. The Manual and Report can be ordered by sending request on the address . On February 24, 2004 MAMA-86 held a National Workshop-Presentation of a Pilot Projects Program "Technical Solutions for Improvement of Ukrainian Citizens' Access to Safe Drinking Water in Urban and Rural Areas" that was implemented under MAMA-86 Campaign "Drinking Water in Ukraine".
- September 2003 — MAMA-86 participated in a Fourth European Youth Water Parliament (Stara Zagora, Bulgaria).
- May 2003 — Four representatives of MAMA-86 participated in the Fifth Pan-European Ministerial Conference "Environment for Europe" and the European ECO-Forum Conference (Kyiv, Ukraine).
- March — June 2003 — a project "Children of Ukraine toward Sustainable Environmentally Balanced Development" was implemented with the financial contribution of UNDP-GEF Dnipro Basin Environment Enhancement Program.
- March 2003 — on the World Water Day MAMA-86 started an advocacy campaign on sanitary and hygiene that is a part of International WASH Campaign.
- March 2003 — three representatives of MAMA-86 participated at the Third World Water Forum in Kyoto (Japan): presentation of the results of "Technical Solutions" Program in the third round of the Water Action Contest, participation in the workshop "Local Water Initiatives in CEE and NIS" under Europe Day, participation in the NGOs debates on public involvement in decision-making on water issues.
- May — October 2002 — a project "Dnipro As Seen by Children" was implemented under the grant of the International Development Research Center, Ottawa, and financial contribution of the UNDP-GEF Dnipro Basin Environment Enhancement Program.
- December 2002 — January 2003 — public hearings on water sector reforms at the local level were held in Odesa, Sebastopol and Artemivsk.
- August — September 2002 — participation in the Water Dome Exhibition, work in caucus "Gender and Water", holding workshop on water sector privatization in the countries with transition economies that were held under the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg.
- April 2002 — report on public access to information and participation in decision-making process on water issues delivered in the Second International Conference on Transboundary Watercourses Management, Poland.
- July — September 2001 — MAMA-86 arranged public consultations on the draft Law on Drinking Water. Consultations were finalized at the public hearings on October 1. In general 155 public amendments to the draft Law were collected and almost third of them were incorporated into the Law adopted on January 10, 2002.
- May 2001 — Inter-sector round table "Water Meter as an Important Tool for Water Sector Reforms in Ukraine". Stakeholders of local, national and international levels participated in the round table.
- April 2001 — MAMA-86 launched a program "Technical Solutions" in 10 Ukrainian cities. The project proposals were elaborated on the basis of knowledge received by the staff at MAMA-86 at the Aquanet Training (May 2000) on pilot project development to address the local drinking water problems with public participation.
- Since July 2000 — Seven regional branches of MAMA-86, in partnership with WECF, implement informational project "Clear Drinking Water in Ukraine" funded by MATRA program.
- 2000 — MAMA-86 actively participated in NGOs' preparation for the Ministerial Consultations in Almaty (October 2000) on reforms of water sector in NIS: preparing suggestions to the official draft documents, participation in NGOs seminars and official session.
- February 2000 — MAMA-86 held NGOs Workshop "Principles of Sustainable Water Use in Ukraine". The seminar was attended by 105 participants. As a result of the seminar, NGO position paper was developed: "Principles of Sustainable Water Use in Ukraine: NGO's recommendations to the Government" (Publication "Principles of Water Use").
- March 2000 — Representatives of MAMA-86 network participated in the Second World Water Forum in Hague and presented results of the "Drinking Water in Ukraine" Campaign.
- 1999—2001 — Project on rehabilitation of Sevastopol Hospital was successfully implemented.
- May 1999 — The first pilot project under Novib support was launched in Tatarbunary.
- Starting from 1999 MAMA-86 carries out monitoring of drinking water quality in Kyiv during springtime.
- 1999 — MAMA-86 made the key presentations on water problems and public participation in decision-making on water-related issues at the NGOs Forum "For Healthy Planet" under the Ministerial Conference "Environment and Health" in London, June 1999.
- 1998—1999 — MAMA-86 jointly with Socis-Gallup International conducted two opinion polls questioned 3,778 respondents in 11 Ukrainian cities.
- April 1998 — presentation of the water project and situation research at the Sixth Session of UN Commission on Sustainable Development.
- Spring 1998 — MAMA-86 organised seminar on drinking water in Kyiv with participation of representatives of NGOs, authorities, academic community, water utilities and businesses from Ukraine and experts from UK.
- 1997—1998 — MAMA-86 conducted independent research of drinking water quality in Artemivsk, Kyiv, Odesa, Tatarbunary; launched its first publication of "Drinking Water" series and published case study "Drinking Water in Ukraine. Communication and Empowerment for Local and International Action" — an only NGO publication that was used for writing of Environment Performance Review by UN ECE experts.
- Spring 1997 — a Water Project was lunched in four cities (Kyiv, Tatarbunary, Odesa, Artemivsk).
