Informational Data Base of the “Ecotelephone”

A computer database was established to facilitate work with the hot line users and accelerate searching of necessary materials. Information collected during implementation of the first projects of “MAMA-86-Kyiv” laid the foundation of the database.

The “Ecotelephone” database includes following informational sections:

• state of environment (atmospheric air, water, soil, radioactive pollution, wastes, etc.);
• healthy lifestyle (foodstuff, physical training, sanitary and hygiene, recreation, sanatoria and health resorts, bad habits and their consequences, diseases prevention);
• drinking water quality and techniques of its purification (filters, additional water purification);
• environmental aspects and alternatives of foodstuff use;
• foodstuff quality;
• interdependence between environment pollution and citizens' health.

The database is permanently completed and updated from the different sources, including, existent projects and:

• consultations with experts;
• Internet sources;
• scientific and popular-science literature;
• materials of national and international conferences, workshops, round tables, exhibitions;
• information from national producers on the certified environmental friendly products.

About 1500 persons apply for information to the Kyiv “Ecotelephone” service alone every year. The “Ecotelephone” team answers more than 1000 inquiries monthly.

More than 15 million persons are informed on the “Ecotelephone” activities over the period of the informational service implementation.

“Ecotelephone” is a sort of environmental problem indicator in the city. The number of calls received by the information service and topics enable to ascertain the citizens' deepest concerns as well as to plan the work on this basis.
