    The 2nd Committee of the 67th UN General Assembly approved on 30 November 2012 a Draft Resolution on the implementation of the International Year of Water Cooperation by which the General Assembly would stress the importance of full involvement by all relevant stakeholders in the implementation of the Year at all levels.     The ninth meeting of the Steering Committee of the National Policy Dialogue on IWRM in Armenia

    The ninth meeting of the Steering Committee of the National Policy Dialogue on Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) was held on 12 December 2012 in Yerevan, Armenia. It brought together over 50 representatives of governmental institutions, international organizations, non-governmental organizations and other stakeholders to discuss key water issues in Armenia.     The Regional meeting of Balkan’s countries “Water Convention and Transboundary water dialogue as an instrument for Adaptation to Climate Change”

    On 19 December 2012 the Regional meeting of Balkan’s countries “Water Convention and Transboundary water dialogue as an instrument for Adaptation to Climate Change” was held in Skopje, Former Yugoslavian Republic (FYR) of Macedonia. Representatives of 17 NGO and governmental organizations, as well as public institutions of Former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia, Greece, Albania and Kosovo discussed different problems of water management in the Balkan region.     The sixth session of the Meeting of the Parties to the UNECE Water Convention: 20 years of successfull water cooperation and opening the global perspectives

    The sixth session of the Meeting of the Parties (MoP-6) to the UNECE Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes took place on 28–30 November 2012 in Rome, Italy. Some 330 participants, representing Parties and non-Parties from the UNECE region and beyond, intergovernmental organizations and non-governmental organizations attended Meeting. The MoP-6 adopted a new programme of work and several decisions that mark a crucial turning point in the globalization of the Convention. Read more...

    UNECE launches project to improve access to clean water and adequate sanitation in the Republic of Moldova

    The first Steering Committee meeting of a new project led by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) to improve access to clean water and adequate sanitation in the Republic of Moldova took place on 21 November 2012 in Chisinau. This new joint undertaking of UNECE and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) is a direct continuation of a first project on targets setting under the Protocol on Water and Health to the UNECE Water Convention by the Moldovan Government, implemented in 2009–2010.     International Year of Water Cooperation 2013

    In December 2010, the United Nations General Assembly declared the year 2013 as the United Nations International Year of Water Cooperation following a proposal submitted by a group of countries, initiated by Tajikistan. Members of UN-Water agreed that World Water Day on 22 March 2013 should also be dedicated to the same theme. Read more...

    19 November — World Toilet Day

    Since 2001 to raise global awareness of the struggle 2.6 billion face every day without access to proper, clean sanitation every year on the 19 November the World Toilet Organization organizes the World Toilet Day (WTD). This year the WTD was carried out in over 19 countries with over 51 events being hosted by various water and sanitation advocates. The 12th World Toilet Summit will be held on 4–6 December 2012 in Durban, South Africa. Read more...

    Regional workshop for Armenian and Georgian NGOs on the UNECE Water Convention and its Protocol on Water and Health took place in Yerevan

    The Armenian-Georgian Regional workshop on raising awareness and strengthening the role of the civil society organizations in the promotion and implementation of the UNECE Water Convention and its Protocol on Water and Health was held in Yerevan, Republic of Armenia (RA) on 9th November 2012.     Water Safety Plan Compendium: Local Action for Safe Water

    WECF and its Bulgarian partners Earth Forever and EcoWorld2007 launched in October 2012 in Bulgaria a comprehensive Water Safety Plan Compendium: “Local Action for Safe Water” for teachers, NGOs, water authorities and administration giving them background information and methodologies how to apply Water Safety Plans in small communities.     A new book “Climate Change and Water Governance”

    The book presents the results of several years’ research focusing on adaptive capacity and water governance in two widely-separated regions of the globe, namely the Swiss Alps and the Chilean Andes. Read more...

    UNENGO «МАМА-86» held the first “Green Consumer Week” in Ukraine

    On October, 8–14 2012 UNENGO «МАМА-86» held the first «Green Consumer Week – 2012» in Ukraine supported by Swedish Society for Nature Conservation.     NGO “Armenian Women for Health and Healthy Environment” (AWHHE) actively works on improvement of access to water and sanitation in rural areas of Armenia and actively participates in working on guidelines on Protocol implementation issues.     15 October — Global Handwashing Day

    This year Global Handwashing Day celebrates its 5th anniversary. Over 200 million people are involved in celebrations in over 100 countries around the world on this day. Since 2008 UNENGO “MAMA-86” holds informational and educational campaigns to promote personal hygiene on this Day. UNENGO “MAMA-86” regional organizations of Feodosia, Poltava, Nizhyn and Nova Kakhovka took part in informational events this year. Read more...

    The eleventh Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP 11) showcased the new Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP)-led TEEB report — The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity for Water and Wetlands. TEEB Water and Wetlands aims to contribute to the conservation, restoration and wise use of wetlands.     UNECE Water Convention turns 20 as it prepares to face global challenges

    The Government of Finland hosted a meeting on 3 and 4 September 2012 to mark the 20th anniversary of the UNECE Water Convention. At the meeting participants debated the achievements together with the future perspectives for the Convention, its forthcoming globalization with the upcoming entry into force of an amendment allowing accession by United Nations Members outside the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). The Convention was able to adapt its work to respond to new challenges and ensured continuity of efforts, which is needed for long-term transboundary water cooperation. Read more...

    Civil society networks from Central Asian countries agree on cooperation in the frameworks of the UNECE Water Convention

    35 representatives of civil society organizations from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, Switzerland and Germany met in Almaty, Kazakhstan at the Central Asian Water meeting on 12th September 2012.     The Central Asian NGOs took active part in the second meeting of the EU-Central Asia Working Group on Climate Change and Strategic Planning of use of natural resources.

    NGOs from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan took an active part in the second meeting of the EU-Central Asia Working Group on Climate Change and Strategic Planning of use of natural resources, held in Almaty, 13-14 September 2012. NGOs’ proposals to strengthen cooperation in the framework of regional cooperation between Central Asian NGOs, the Public Council under the Interstate Commission for Sustainable Development in Central Asia and Central Asian NGOs Network “Climate. Energy. Water and Health” were included into the outcome document of the WG meeting. Read more...

    France and UN ECE continue to support the activities on equitable access to water and sanitation in the pan-European region

    On 27-28 September 2012 the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosted the first meeting of the expert group on monitoring progress in achieving equitable access to water and sanitation in the pan-European region under the Protocol on Water and Health. It is a continuation of the initiative of France and UNECE – Protocol on water and health Secretariat to support the governments to reduce the disparities on equal access to water and sanitation in pan-European region.     Water Safety Plans for Georgia

    On August 31st, Tbilisi, Georgia the Greens Movement of Georgia/Friends of the Earth-Georgia presented the results of the project “Water Safety Plans (WSP) with participation of schools” to the representatives of NGO’s and State Authorities, foundations, students with participation of and invited WECF experts. During this project 6 Water Safety Plans were implemented in 6 villages of Georgia by the NGO’s. Read more...

    “Linking Water & Sanitation to Agriculture and Energy —Two Case Studies from Georgia and Kyrgyzstan” — WECF’s contribution to the workshop “Towards a Green Economy — The Water-Food-Energy Nexus”

    WECF contributes to the Stockholm WWW 2012 Workshop “Towards a Green Economy — The Water-Food-Energy Nexus” with two case studies from Georgia and Kyrgyzstan — former Soviet republics, where the infrastructures, especially water supply, adequate sanitation and wastewater management have been deteriorating increasingly during the last 20 years. The holistic approach to link water, sanitation, energy and farming through a community based set up is innovative for the region. The approach is in the heart of the Water-Food-Energy Nexus.     Cooperation in transboundary basins and adaptation to climate change

    Transboundary cooperation is necessary to prevent negative impacts of unilateral activities and to support the coordination of adaptation measures at the river-basin level. The Water Convention provides a sound framework for transboundary cooperation also in the context of adaptation to climate change and is supporting countries in developing transboundary adaptation strategies through guidance, capacity-building, projects on the ground and exchange of experience.     The Eco-TIRAS Dniester River Youth Summer School in 2012

    The International environmental Association of River Keepers Eco-TIRAS organized the traditional annual Dniester youth summer school “Dniester — 2012” in Moldavian village on the Dniester river bank. The participants in the summer school were the youngsters 16–22 years old from Moldova and Transnistria, who actively work on protection of the environment, in particular the Dniester river.     The 4th International Dry Toilet Conference was held in Tampere, Finland on the 22nd — 24th of August 2012. 160 participants from 38 countries and, in addition, 86 participants in the seminar in Finnish “Käytä kuivana” took part in the event.     Over the last ten years attention of ecologists and public is attracted to the man- made and natural formation of new deltas in the reservoirs of the Dnieper river, Ukraine. During the last 3 years the author monitors the processes of hydromorphological transformations in 3 upper Dnieper reservoirs and studies the new deltas formation: rates, impacts and perspectives.     The 16th meeting of the EU Water Initiative for Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia Working Group was held on 2 July 2012 in Geneva. The Working Group met at its annual meeting to review progress, set priorities, share the experience of target countries and information about relevant projects, and to endorse the work plan for the 2013 year.     On-going preparation for the sixth session of the Meeting of the Parties to the Water Convention

    The joint meeting of the Working Group on Monitoring and Assessment and the Working Group on Integrated Water Resources Management took place in Geneva, 3–4 July 2012. This meeting was an important event in preparation for the sixth session of the Meeting of the Parties to the Water Convention (MoP-6), that will take place in Rome from 28 to 30 November 2012. The meeting discussed the issues on Opening the Water Convention, Establishment of the Implementation Committee, the Working Program for the period 2013–2015, Transboundary Groundwaters, Special edition assessment on the water-food-energy nexus and Vision for the future of the Water Convention and took the important decisions on the agenda issues.     UNECE Supports Development of New Water Legislation in Georgia

    The first Steering Committee meeting of the Georgian National Policy Dialogue on Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM), held in Tbilisi on 11 and 12 June 2012. It approved some basic elements for new water legislation. The Steering Committee meeting followed by a Stakeholders Workshop was organized by the Georgian Ministry of Environment Protection and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), in cooperation with Global Water Partnership — Georgia.     Brawn bag event in Geneva to promote best practices on insuring equal right to water and sanitation

    To raise awareness on good practices of providing an equitable access to water and sanitation the Brown bag event was organized by French Ministry of Social Affairs and Health, UNECE, Secretariat of Protocol on water and health in Geneva, July, 3 2012. The recent publications on this issue as well as some country cases from the book “No one left behind and plan for further work on this issue in the region were presented to the participants of the joint meeting of the Working Group on Monitoring and Assessment and the Working Group on Integrated Water Resources Management.     Payments for ecosystem services as a tool for implementation of Water Convention

    The Parties to Water Convention should take all appropriate measures to ensure conservation of ecosystems not limited to transboundary ones. For the last years the ecosystem services concept and payment for ecosystem services were introduced and actively promoted as an innovative tool for Water convention implementation based on the Recommendations on PES in IWRM, PES scheme establishment and application in pilots and good practices collection and analysis.     Usurped river: natural disasters and departmental voluntarism on the Dniester River

    In July 2012 , firstly the catastrophic situation has been defined in the Lower Dniester — transboundary river of Moldova and Ukraine. It is first time when the massive blooming of water by algae, vast death of fishes and aquatic organisms were observed because of lack of river flow, lack of needed discharging of water from reservoirs for the ecological and sanitarian purposes during the spring and hot summer. It is needed to take the urgent measures and review of the rules of reservoirs’ exploitation with taking into due account not only hydropower demands, but also the demands of other water users, including nature and people.     Public demands to solve environmental problems of Dnieper!

    The 4th Dnieper Forum of NGOs from three countries of Dnieper river basin took place on 6-7 July 2012 in Kyiv, Ukraine. Dnieper Forum was dedicated to annual Dnieper Day celebrations and the 20th anniversary of UNECE Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes (Water Convention) adoption. 88 representatives of NGOs, scientific and water sector institutions from 19 cities from three Dnieper riparian countries gathered to discuss River problems and ways to solve them.     6–8 June, Geneva : the Task Force on Public Participation (PP) in Decision-making of the Aarhus Convention and the Secretariat of the Protocol on Water and Health organized the joint meeting to discuss the ways for further elaboration of PP in decisions having a significant impact on the environment with focus on Water and health. The meeting included the open consultations on the Aarhus Convention’s Draft recommendations and the work of the Drafting group on the manual on PP under the Protocol on Water and Health.     The biggest United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development ever held in Brazil on 20-22 June 2012

    The biggest UN conference ever held in Brazil on 20-22 June 2012 and resulted in 692 voluntary commitments for sustainable development by different stakeholders and the outcome document of the Conference “The future we want”. Water issue was one of the key themes of the RIO+20 Debates and UN-Water Days sessions at the RIO+20 Conference and reflected in 6 paragraphs of the outcome document.
