September 28, 2013, Kyiv — The chilly weather and chances of rain did not scare off about 50 young people from participating in the eco quest co-organized by MAMA-86, the National Natural Park “Holosiyivsky,” and FSC Ukraine. The activity was carried out to support the Green Consumer Week “Environment on Your Plate” (MAMA-86) within the framework of the Global Green Action Week and the international action FSC Friday 2013. According to Andriy Khrutba, NNP Holosiyivsky Education Department Head, five teams of five players each actually competed, the rest having come to cheer or being too young for this specific quest. The quest route ran in the Holosiyivsky Forest from the settlement of Feofania to the lake of Didorivka. Fulfilling their tasks, the competitors looked for ways to solve environmental problems. At one of stations, for example, they had to name ten steps toward sustainable food. The quest wound up in an eco-picnic, also focused on nature conservation. After the event, its participants received information materials produced by MAMA-86 for the Week. The Swedish Society for Nature Conservation has been conducting similar campaigns in their country in October for many years running. These campaigns have helped significantly increase public awareness of advantages of environment-friendly way of living, develop a legal framework that encourages sustainable consumption and prohibits or limits supply of environmentally harmful goods and services, as well as form a circle of eco-responsible producers and sellers who, on their part, further the transition of the Swedish society toward more sustainable consumption behavior.
