Building Environmental Democracy in Ukraine

MAMA-86 is implementing the "Building Environmental Democracy in Ukraine" project with financial support from the European Union.

Implementation period: 2013—2015.

The project’s overall objective is to improve the environmental policy of Ukraine through an enhanced and qualified public participation in environmental policy planning, implementation and assessment. The project would contribute to this general objective by ensuring fulfillment of the following specific objectives:

(a) Encouraging a dialogue between different stakeholders in environmental policy planning and implementation, in particular on the regional and local level;

(b) Improving information exchange, promoting transparency and integrity in the field of environmental policy implementation; and

(c) Strengthening the capacity of environmental civil society organizations (CSOs) to participate in policy planning, implementation, monitoring and assessment.

The project comprises four components:

  • Component 1. Policy analysis and advocacy;
  • Component 2. Networking and Information Exchange (Public awareness);
  • Component 3. Capacity-Building; and
  • Component 4. CSOs’ involvement in environmental policy planning, monitoring and assessment.

Expected results:

  • Improved cooperation of environmental CSOs, inter alia through networking and provision of analytical, methodological, informational, and educational tools for effective participation in environmental policy planning, implementation, monitoring, and assessment;
  • Enhanced capacity of environmental CSOs (as well as local civil servants) to participate in the development, implementation, monitoring, and assessment of regional/local action plans for nature conservation;
  • Increased effectiveness of ensuring environmental rights of Ukrainian citizens (including the rights to information and public participation in decision-making).
