As a result of the implementation of UNECE project «Water Quality in Central Asia» funded by the UN Development Account (March 2009 – June 2012) a regular framework for cooperation on water quality in Central Asia was developed. In May 2012 in Almaty representatives of the five Central Asian states Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan) endorsed the first comprehensive Cooperation Plan on water quality.

The plan includes three strategic directions:

  • Information exchange and harmonisation of national policies with regard to water quality;
  • Cooperation on water quality monitoring and data exchange, and
  • The establishment of a regional expert body.
