On the 29^th of June 14 countries of the Danube Basin jointly celebrate the Day of Danube, one of the greatest river systems in Europe.

The celebration of the Danube Day was initiated in 2004 by the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River (ICPDR) — an international organization that unites the Danube Basin countries and the European Commission.

Every year in honor of the Danube Day — a common pan-European event — festivals and environmental actions, designed to raise awareness and environmental culture of the famous river’s shores inhabitants are held synchronously in 14 Danube countries. These activities, aimed at increasing citizens’ involvement into the Danube’s water resources conservation, are carried out in all countries under the auspices of the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River.

In Ukraine, the Danube Basin includes the basins of the Tisza, Prut and Siret along with the delta of the Danube itself.

Danube basin is the world's largest international river basin and covers 10 percent of Europe. From the source to the mouth, the Danube flows across 10 countries: Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova and Ukraine. A part of the Danube Basin also covers areas of Italy, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, Macedonia, Poland, Switzerland and the Czech Republic. Efforts to protect the Danube unite these nations and testify to the possibility of cooperation between the nations in spite of their political and socio-economic differences. Various events will be held in all the Danube countries to celebrate the Danube Day 2014.
