In the September 2012 issue of the “NewsWaterfall” Newsletter UNECE Water Convention turns 20 as it prepares to face global challenges The Government of Finland hosted a meeting on 3 and 4 September 2012 to mark the 20th anniversary of the UNECE Water Convention. At the meeting participants debated the achievements together with the future perspectives for the Convention, its forthcoming globalization with the upcoming entry into force of an amendment allowing accession by United Nations Members outside the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). The Convention was able to adapt its work to respond to new challenges and ensured continuity of efforts, which is needed for long-term transboundary water cooperation. Read more... Civil society networks from Central Asian countries agree on cooperation in the frameworks of the UNECE Water Convention 35 representatives of civil society organizations from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, Switzerland and Germany met in Almaty, Kazakhstan at the Central Asian Water meeting on 12th September 2012. NGOs from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan took an active part in the second meeting of the EU-Central Asia Working Group on Climate Change and Strategic Planning of use of natural resources, held in Almaty, 13-14 September 2012. NGOs’ proposals to strengthen cooperation in the framework of regional cooperation between Central Asian NGOs, the Public Council under the Interstate Commission for Sustainable Development in Central Asia and Central Asian NGOs Network “Climate. France and UN ECE continue to support the activities on equitable access to water and sanitation in the pan-European region On 27-28 September 2012 the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosted the first meeting of the expert group on monitoring progress in achieving equitable access to water and sanitation in the pan-European region under the Protocol on Water and Health. It is a continuation of the initiative of France and UNECE – Protocol on water and health Secretariat to support the governments to reduce the disparities on equal access to water and sanitation in pan-European region. Water Safety Plans for Georgia On August 31st, Tbilisi, Georgia the Greens Movement of Georgia/Friends of the Earth-Georgia presented the results of the project “Water Safety Plans (WSP) with participation of schools” to the representatives of NGO’s and State Authorities, foundations, students with participation of and invited WECF experts. During this project 6 Water Safety Plans were implemented in 6 villages of Georgia by the NGO’s. Read more...
