Water: How not to Pollute, not How to Clean |

Environmental problems of rivers, lakes and seas, rational use of water in municipal sector, industry and energy, impact of anthropogenic activities on the state of water resources and ways of cleaning up from pollution, water impact on the human organism – this is far from the full list of all problems, which are tried to be solved by the high school students, participants in the contest “All Ukrainian Junior Water Prize”, the national part of the International Contest “Stockholm Junior Water Prize”. Defending of final works was held on March, 21–23, in the National Technical University of Ukraine “KPI”. 56 participants from all over Ukraine gathered to compete with peers and offer their solution for most troubling problems. And not only to compete, but also get experience and take part in interesting informative and cultural programme, offered by the competition organizers, publishing house “EKOinform”. Young researches had visited the Water Museum – CE “Water Information Centre”, Desnyanska water supply station of “Kyivvodokanal”, prepared art scenes and presented their region at the gala dinner after the diplomas awarding and winners of the competition announcement. During two days the competition jury had been listening to and selected 6 works, which were additionally defended during the last day. According to the results of additional presenting the winners were selected. Grand Prix of the contest became the work of the pupil of specialized school named after Lutsenko №197, Andriy Andrusyshyn’s “Crustaceans as Biomarkers of Black Sea Pollution of Heavy Metals”, 2nd place was awarded to the work “Seeker” by the pupil of Donetsk Grammar School №70 Noga Mykhaylo, 3rd place to the work “Solar Power Station in Hydro-gel-wind Energy Complex” by the pupil of Voznesensk School №10 Balabazan Polina. Besides that, the final part included three works: “Mirco Hydro Power Station with Centrifugal Turbine to work on plain rivers” by the pupil of Dzvynyachka village School (Borshchivsk region, Ternopil oblast) Mulyarchuk Anyuta, “The Biological Method of Water Purification of the Kalmius River Using Aquatic Plants” by the pupil of School №57 of Mariupol Vereshchaga Maria and “Ukrainian Icebraker” by the pipul of Krasyliv Grammar School Balanyuk Yana. The awards ceremony for Grand Prix and 2nd and 3rd prizes will be held in the Embassy of Sweden in Ukraine. The main award for Grand Prix winner is the trip to Stockholm, 25-30 of August, for participation in the International Contest “Stockholm Junior Water Prize”. Short information about the contest: This contest is the national stage of International Contest “Stockholm Junior Water Prize, which is held within the World Water Week in Stockholm, where more than 30 countries participate. That’s where the awards are given: Stockholm Water Prize for the best scientific development, Stockholm Junior Water Prize for the best youth project and Stockholm Industry Water Award for the most effective use of water in industry. These are the most prestigious contests in the field of water environmental saving and they are held under the auspices and direct involvement of the Royal Family. As well as the Nobel Prize, “Stockholm Water Prize” is given by His Majesty the King of Sweden Gustav, the award for winner of SJWP – blue crystal drop and 5 000 US dollars are given by Her Majesty Princess of Sweden Victoria. It’s the eights year of the contest in Ukraine under the auspice of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Sources of Ukraine, Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of Ukraine, cooperating with the chemical-technology faculty of NTUU “KPI” and JE “Kyivvodokanal”.
