Projects’ participants

MAMA-86’s network is Ukrainian partner of SSHD project which was implemented in 3 countries: Ukraine, Bulgaria and Romania. MAMA-86’s project partners: Kyiv Central office and 9 regional branches: MAMA-86-Artemivsk, MAMA-86-Mykolaiv, MAMA-86-Nizhyn, MAMA-86-Nova Kahovka, MAMA-86-Sevastopol, MAMA-86-Ternopil, MAMA-86-Feodosia, MAMA-86-Yaremche, MAMA-86-Poltava. Overall National project coordinator — Kyiv Central office of MAMA-86.

ЕLA projects were funded by MFS Program of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. ELA projects is a part of ELA Program is implemented by Women in Europe for Common Future) — WECF in the EECCA region. MAMA-86 is participating in ELA Program from January 2008.

Period of implementation

Project "Safe sanitation, health and dignity" 10/2007 — 09/2010

ELA projects were 1year projects started in January 2008 and completed in 31 October 2010:

  • 1st ELA project of MAMA-86 — "Community empowerment and local actions on Sustainable sanitation for Safe water and Sustainable development of rural and peri-urban areas of Ukraine" — 1 January — 31 December 2008.
  • 2d ELA project of MAMA-86 — "Ecosan promotion in Ukraine by local actions and legal framework development" — 1 January — 31 December 2009.
  • 3d ELA project of MAMA-86 – “Ecosan monitoring, evaluation and promotion in Ukraine” - 1 January - 31 October 2010

Project area: rural community, garden and dachas cooperatives, peri-urban areas and city microdistricts of cottages in 9 regions of Ukraine, where MAMA-86 is working: Kyiv, Artemivsk, Mykolayiv, Nizhyn, Nova Kahovka, Poltava, Sevastopol, Feodosiya, Yaremche.

Target groups

  • People (rural communities, members of gardening — dacha cooperatives, dwellers of peri-urban and city areas without connection to centralized Water Supply and sanitation systems;
  • Local authorities;
  • Experts on WSS, Hygiene and Health, scientists, mass media.

The main goal: to improve access to safe sanitation and water supply by raising awareness and capacity building of poor local communities and cooperation of stakeholders to implement environmentally friendly, economically affordable and efficient ecosanitation technologies in 9 project areas. Projects will contribute to the sustainable implementation of MDG 7, 1, 2, 3 and 4 in the target regions and show ways to improved living and health conditions for the poor and rural population of Ukraine. Replicable demonstration projects on cost reduction, income generation, and environmental protection will be implemented in 9 projects areas for poverty elimination.

Projects’ tasks

  • To enhance public knowledge about water and health, principles of sustainable development of water sector, wastewater management and ensuring hygienic welfare as the basis for welfare and health, modern ekosanitary approaches and technologies to address problems of sanitation, green gardening, organic farming at individual household and local communities;
  • To build local capacity to mobilize communities to solve local problems of sanitation and water, to train local trainers on ecosan and environmentally friendly technologies for 9 project communities;
  • To implement model of ecosan technologies to spread in 9 project areas;
  • To improve access to sanitation conditions of more than 1000 citizens by building of:
    1. dry toilets for 61 private households,
    2. dry toilets for 2 schools,
    3. filters for cleaning «gray» sewage to 9 households and 2 schools,
    4. facilities for composting organic households waste.
  • To improve water supply for 3 localities by the study and analysis of local problems, and discuss their solutions. Preparation of Water Safety Plans for 3 schools and localities.

Results

  • 66 dry toilets for private households (HH) have been built with project support (61 with HH DTs +2 chirch DTs funded by SSHD project and 3 — with ELA project support), 4 HHDTs are still under construction at final stage (seat or door are not installed yet) in 9 regions. Additional 9 dry toilets have been built in 5 regions without projects financial support but with MAMA-86’s consultations;
  • 1 dry toilet for the parish of Greek Catholic Church in village Zvanivka, Artemivs’k rayon was built (for more information about toilets built see);
  • 2 school’s dry toilets have been built in Nizhyn city and village Korsunka, Kherson oblast;
  • 13 filters for grey waste water were built in 9 regions;
  • 2 filters for grey waste water were built in schools where dry toilets were built;
  • 1 school demonstration garden has been implemented in Nizhyn: more then 40 trees and bushes were planted in April 2010;
  • 1 demonstration private garden was planted as initiative of householder in v. Zvanivka /Artemivsk rayon;
  • In project’s 9 regions facilities for composting of organic household waste were built;
  • 258 residents of 62 households and 775 parish people of Greek Catholic Church and 219 students of two schools improved access to sanitary conditions;
  • 5523 residents of villages and cities in project areas have better knowledge of environmentally sustainable facilities;
  • 9 MAMA-86 branches and 50 local citizens improved their skills in project planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation and ready to continue ecosan promotion at local level;
  • 8 schools +1 college have been involved in the development of water safety plans for Korsunka village, in Nizhyn — 1school №2 developed water safety plan and as a result a local purifying system for this school has been installed in 2010 (funded by Women for Water Partnership);
  • 832 samples of drinking water sources in 10 regions were analyzed for nitrates content during 2008-2010. Results of children water monitoring in the village Korsunka of Novo- Kakhovsky rayon Kherson oblast, v. Machuhy Poltava rayon and city Nizhyn became the basis for discussion of the drinking water supply of the local schools;
  • 91 leaflets, brochures, posters, maps, infomaterials on the topic of safe drinking water and sanitation were published during 3 years;
  • Information about the proposed measures reached trainings, workshops , conferences and Mass media more than 6 million inhabitants in Ukraine.

Based on the results achieved it could be stated that ecological sanitation concept is well received by private householders in Ukraine. Taking into account project’ results, NGO MAMA-86 will continue ecosanitation advocacy at local-national levels.
