October 1–4, 2013, Nszhyn, Chernihiv Oblast — MAMA-86-Nizhyn members and volunteers pasted up 200 posters throughout the city for themes of this year’s Green Consumer Week’s “Environment on Your Plate” campaign. Information materials, both obtained from the MAMA-86 central office and produced independently, were also widely used in all the campaign’s activities. The first such activity was showing students of general education school #5 how forest resources are managed by the Vertiyivka Forestry. At the school itself, lessons were delivered on responsible nutrition and sustainable food, and 8th to 11th grade students were polled to find out their level of awareness of these issues. In the village of Vertiyivka, the parents of preschool children learned the basics of responsible nutrition. They attended a master class on making candies of dried fruits. The campaign in Nizhyn finished with participation in an organic food fair. Customers were offered tasting local grass teas and candies of dried fruits and nuts, as well as recipes of the teas and candies. Please see pictures from the campaign in Nizhyn on the MAMA-86 Facebook page: *** Green Consumer Weeks in Ukraine – week-long concentrated awareness campaigns aimed at popularizing environmentally responsible consumption and focused on one of important themes of sustainable consumption – have been carried out since 2012 by the Ukrainian National Environmental NGO "MAMA-86" with support from the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation and in collaboration with various partner organizations. The Swedish Society for Nature Conservation has been conducting similar campaigns in their country in October for many years running. These campaigns have helped significantly increase public awareness of advantages of environment-friendly way of living, develop a legal framework that encourages sustainable consumption and prohibits or limits supply of environmentally harmful goods and services, as well as form a circle of eco-responsible producers and sellers who, on their part, further the transition of the Swedish society toward more sustainable consumption behavior.
