“Linking Water & Sanitation to Agriculture and Energy —Two Case Studies from Georgia and Kyrgyzstan” — WECF’s contribution to the workshop “Towards a Green Economy — The Water-Food-Energy Nexus”

WECF contributes to the Stockholm WWW 2012 Workshop “Towards a Green Economy — The Water-Food-Energy Nexus” with two case studies from Georgia and Kyrgyzstan — former Soviet republics, where the infrastructures, especially water supply, adequate sanitation and wastewater management have been deteriorating increasingly during the last 20 years. The holistic approach to link water, sanitation, energy and farming through a community based set up is innovative for the region. The approach is in the heart of the Water-Food-Energy Nexus. Cooperation in transboundary basins and adaptation to climate change

Transboundary cooperation is necessary to prevent negative impacts of unilateral activities and to support the coordination of adaptation measures at the river-basin level. The Water Convention provides a sound framework for transboundary cooperation also in the context of adaptation to climate change and is supporting countries in developing transboundary adaptation strategies through guidance, capacity-building, projects on the ground and exchange of experience. The Eco-TIRAS Dniester River Youth Summer School in 2012

The International environmental Association of River Keepers Eco-TIRAS organized the traditional annual Dniester youth summer school “Dniester — 2012” in Moldavian village on the Dniester river bank. The participants in the summer school were the youngsters 16–22 years old from Moldova and Transnistria, who actively work on protection of the environment, in particular the Dniester river. The 4th International Dry Toilet Conference was held in Tampere, Finland

The 4th International Dry Toilet Conference was held in Tampere, Finland on the 22nd — 24th of August 2012. 160 participants from 38 countries and, in addition, 86 participants in the seminar in Finnish “Käytä kuivana” took part in the event. The main theme of the conference was “Drivers for ecological dry toilets in urban and rural areas”. Read more…

Hydromorphological transformation and environmental problems of the Dnipro reservoirs — see everything from space

Over the last ten years attention of ecologists and public is attracted to the man- made and natural formation of new deltas in the reservoirs of the Dnieper river, Ukraine. During the last 3 years the author monitors the processes of hydromorphological transformations in 3 upper Dnieper reservoirs and studies the new deltas formation: rates, impacts and perspectives.
