On April 12, 2012 the seminar-training on Water Safety Plan (WSP) was held in Kyiv.

The training was organized by Association “UkrVodokanalEcologia”, NGO “MAMA-86” and WHO Regional Office in Europe with a support of the Ministry of Regional development, building and housing and communal economy. The Ministry hosted the event and provided the informational support. 42 representatives of water utilities (including 24 from Vodokanals), the Ministry, SIDA, WHO-Ukraine office and Ukrainian water experts took part in the training. Among trainers of this training were Dr. Enkhtsetseg Shinee (WHO-Europe), Prof Dr Kenneth M Persson (Southern Sweden Water Supply) and Margriet Samwel (WECF). The WHO Experts presented the WHO Guidelines on Drinking-water Quality, particularly the integrated risk assessment risk management approach, trained participants in the theoretical concepts and practical experience on implementation of a Water Safety Plan, in using of the Water Safety Plan Assessment Tool as well as presented WSP for small scale supplies. Anna Tsvietkova, “MAMA-86”’s expert, introduced the Guidance document on water supply and sanitation in extreme weather events.

The participants were able to check the Russian version of the WSP Assessment Tool and exchange the first opinions about possibility to work on WSP. The representatives of Water utilities from cities Kyiv, Odessa, Kolomyya, Crimea Autonomous Republic as well as Association “UkrvodokanalEcologia” expressed their interest to work on the WSP and to use the Tool. The program of the training included 6 presentations:

1) WHO Guidelines on Drinking water Quality (in Russian), Dr. Enkhtsetseg Shinee, expert of WHO-Europe;

2) Water safety planning, Dr. Enkhtsetseg Shinee, expert of WHO-Europe;

3) Practical implementation of WSP in water supply companies: Swedish experience, Prof. Dr. Kenneth M. Persson, expert of Southern Sweden Water Supply;

4) Specific challenges of WSP in small scale water supply and sanitation services, Margriet Samwel, WECF expert;

5) Water Safety Plan Quality Assurance Tool Dr. Enkhtsetseg Shinee, expert of WHO-Europe;

6) Introduction of Guidance document on Water supply and sanitation in extreme weather events, Anna Tsvietkova, expert of “МАМА-86”.

On 13 April team of tree experts: Dr Enkhtsetseg Shinee, Prof Dr Kenneth M. Persson and Anna Tsvietkova visited the Dniprovska Water treatment plant and catchment area on Dnieper river (one of 3 main sources of drinking water supply for Kyiv city). The Kyiv Vodokanal team of 7 experts leading by Chief Engineer of watersupply Department Vladimir Kostyuk hosted the experts and showed and explained in details the scheme and the key stages of the drinking water production chain and discussed with the WHO experts the main risks at these stages.
